- Tuott (early mention)
- Tuoten (early mention)
- Tutt (early mention)
- Dut (early mention)
First Mention
The first mentioned Thut from Kaltbrunn was in 1406. «Weltin Tuoten» was a witness, when a knight «Claus Wurzer» from Amden (citizen of Chur) had to swear the «Urfehde».
This «Claus Wurzer» was a bandit in the Swiss confederation. When the citizen of Glarus captured him (in the «Gaster» region), they brang him to castle «Nieder-Windeck» where he was arrested.
After his stay in jail he had to swear the middle ages usual «Urfehde». In this oath he swore never to attack or hijack the people who captured him.
The citizen of Glarus also forced Claus Wurzer to name 16 citizen who would pay the amount of «1000 Gulden» if he would break this oath. One of the 16 citizen out of the «Niederamt zu Windeck» was «Weltin Tuot».
More mentioned people
- Heinrich Thut, born in 1600, 36 years «Landschreiber» (writer of the land) in the «Gaster» region.
- His grandson Joseph Duoth also was «Landschreiber» between 1708 – 1714.
- In 1820 an Anton Thut von Kaltbrunn was executed because he threw his wife to ground with a stone and threw her into the well.
Heraldry
In the public records office in Canton St. Gallen exists a family crest of the Thut from Kaltbrunn. On this crest there is a notice to a document of the archive of abbey Einsiedeln. This document from the year 1453 was sealed by Heinrich Tutt/Tuott from Kaltbrunn. He used a lily for his seal and was mayor of Kloster Einsiedeln. The same crest can be found in the crest book of the «Siebmachers».
There is now colors described, so we don’t know anything about the color of the crest. Outside heraldry lilys are a symbol of purity and innocense. A white and blue lily «Dalmatinische Iris» can be an emblem of the affluence through trading. Lilys in heraldry are often yellow and means «knightly».
The lily in the crest, and the mentions as «land writer» and «mayor» are signs that the Thut from Kaltbrunn might be probably in distinguished position.
